of Next IABC/Charlotte Event:
Pirate
Style"
IABC/Charlotte's Monthly
Meeting Wed., Sept. 2 11:30
a.m.-1:15 p.m. Charlotte Regional RealtorŪ
Association 1201 Greenwood Cliff
Come aboard to hear Maersk's
Mary Ann Kotlarich and
Jefferson Campbell share the global
communication challenges of a pirate attack.
While the world's eyes and ears were
focused on media coverage of the pirated Maersk Alabama
cargo ship last April, Maersk North America's
communications team was staffing the emergency
preparedness "war room." The team coordinated
communications with worldwide Maresk units, media and
much more. Kotlarich, director of external
communications, and Campbell, general manager of
communications technology, will provide a
behind-the-scenes look at what worked and what didn't as
well as first-hand advice for other communicators in a
crisis of global interest. Invite your
operations and logistics leaders to this meeting. Cost
is $20 for members, students and nonprofits and $35 for
nonmembers. Register by 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at http://www.ciabc.com/

A Note From the President
Greetings!
August has been a great month for
IABC/Charlotte.
We had a terrific turnout for our
Summer Social. Long-time friends had a
chance to get reacquainted, and new arrivals were
able to get connected. Thanks to everyone
who made this event such a
success.
IABC/Charlotte also hosted a judging session
to review communication entries submitted for the
IABC/Atlanta Golden Flame Awards. Sessions
like these create opportunities to learn more
about what makes communication work as other
communicators share what they are thinking and
doing. Thanks to Dianne Chase,
Jessica Dey and Cathy
Clark for coordinating the logistics; and
to volunteer judges Cathy Gardner, Leanne
Pupchek and Cynthia
Moore.
Back to
school As summer winds down and the school
year begins, now is a great time to consider what
we're doing for our own continuing
education. For IABC members, tapping into
the knowledge and expertise of our peers across
the country and around the globe is as simple as
logging in to the IABC members-only web site to
access MemberSpeak or MemberSearch or the online archives of Communication World, CW
Bulletin and other
material.
What?! You're not
currently a member? Now is a great time to consider
joining or re-joining IABC. September is
IABC Worldwide Member Month. That means the
$40 application fee will be waived for new or
lapsed members. Just be sure to submit your
application during the month of September to be
eligible for this special discount. (Note that
this promotion does not affect renewing members,
transitional members or students, who do not pay
the application fee.) To learn more about
IABC membership, visit www.iabc.com/membershipinfo.
