"Best
New Ideas In Employee
Communication"
IABC/Charlotte's Monthly Meeting Wednesday, October 7
Do you bring enough
fresh, proven communication ideas to your
organization? Incorporating new ideas is a
principle way high-performing organizations improve and
succeed. Ron Hess, president of Motiv8 Communications
and winner of dozens of IABC awards, will share examples
of "best new ideas" in employee
communications. Ron will take you inside
some of America's leading and most successful companies
to learn about initiatives impacting employees and
boosting the bottom line. They include
creating employee communication councils, using new
media to reach consumers and foster an idea-sharing
culture, and avoiding information overload with
rollouts/communications for key business
initiatives. Before opening Motiv8
Communications in 2002, Ron worked 27 years in corporate
communications and managed internal employee
communication programs at GE, Eaton, International Paper
and Watson Wyatt. He is a frequent speaker and writer on
employee communication topics. Cost is $20
members, students and nonprofits, and $35 nonmembers.

Pirate Hijacking
No Easter Egg Hunt,
No, Wait...!
Mary Ann Kotlarich regaled
attendees at the IABC/Charlotte September meeting with
stories of how she, Jeff Campbell and others at Maersk
in Charlotte rose to the occasion when the Maersk
Alabama was pirated last spring off the east coast of
Africa. Lean communication staffs at
several Maersk business units combined to set up a "war
room" in Norfolk, Va. They handled everything from
worldwide media inquiries to communicating with Maersk
top brass, the U.S. government and military and the
families of the crew on the captured ship.
"Who got to call the White House about the
Easter egg hunt on the White House lawn?" Kotlarich
asked rhetorically, noting that she did, as the staff
arranged that event and other entertainment for the
crew's families assembled in
Washington. With the media, the Maersk
communications team found themselves being tested to
stay on message as reporters repeatedly called different
members of their team with the same questions.

you.
I would also like to thank recent

Sheffield. We appreciate your continued
membership and commitment to our organization.
Why did you join IABC? Did you
join to learn new skills and to network with other
professional communicators? If you answered yes,
then you should know that one of the best ways to
accomplish these goals is by volunteering for your
