Recap
of the January Meeting
"Getting Beyond Angry:
Negotiating and Communicating Your Way Out of
Toxic Disputes" was the focus of the
January 14 IABC/Charlotte meeting.
Charlotte public relations executive
David Coburn showed how "spin it and win it" and
other traditional organizational responses no
longer work with a public that is not easily
appeased and expects to be lied to.
Coburn,
vice president of Luquire George Andrews and vice
president of programs for IABC/Charlotte, shared
the "mutual gains" approach, developed by the
MIT-Harvard Public Dispute Program. Key
tenets are:
- Acknowledge the concerns of the
other side
- Encourage joint fact-finding
- Offer contingent commitments to
minimize impacts, promise to compensate knowable
but unintended impacts
- Accept responsibility, admit
mistakes, share power
- Act in a trustworthy fashion at
all times
- Focus on
building long-term
relationships
