November Meeting
Recap
United Way's McIntyre Shares
Strategies IABC,
AFP Donate to United
Way
On Nov. 4 at Johnson
& Wales University, keynote speaker Jane McIntyre
highlighted communication strategies that have been
vital in her effort to turn around United Way of Central
Carolinas. Speaking to
66 attendees at a joint meeting of the Charlotte
chapters of IABC and the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP), the executive director
noted:
-
Value relationships, old and new,
including the media
-
Be authentic and honest, even if
it's painful
-
Be passionate about your
story
-
Be flexible and prioritize your
time
-
Be candid and open
-
Simplify your
message
She doesn't anticipate campaigns
for United Way or the Arts & Science Council
becoming a thing of the past. "Most corporations don't
want lots of fundraising people knocking on their
doors," she said.
Changing United Way's
culture is one of McIntyre's biggest challenges, she
said. "It (the culture) has evolved over 20 years, and
it's hard for people to trust when it's been a
silo-style organization," she said. "That's not the most
productive, creative way to do business. I'm trying to
help people remember how creative they are." To support United Way,
IABC/Charlotte and AFP gave a $500 unrestricted gift to
the organization's Community Care Fund. The bulk of the
donation came from the $421 that the groups cleared on
the Nov. 4
meeting. |

A Note From the
President
Greetings!
A Rand McNally map of
the world is spread out on my table. Joey Ramone
is on the stereo doing his rocked-out cover of
"What A Wonderful World." As the T-shirts say -
life is good. Though I wonder which is
more telling of my age - Joey or the reference to
a "stereo"? And
what, you may ask, does this have to do with
IABC/Charlotte? Well, last month we
partnered with the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP) to bring you Jane
McIntyre, who shared her communication
priorities at the helm of the United Way. Many of
you turned out for that event. So many in fact,
that we turned a nice profit.
In agreement with
AFP, we are donating the entire proceeds to United
Way's Community Care Fund, even rounding up the
figure to $500. Local needs are great - just like
they are in many places around the country and
across the globe. Thank you for helping us be a
part of helping our community. What Does the "I"
Stand For?That brings me back to Joey
and the map. The "I" in IABC stands for
"International." Through your affiliation with
IABC, you are connected to business communicators
in more than 80 countries. As we all know,
technology makes this a small, and ever shrinking,
planet. Through
IABC, you can easily trade communication insights
and expertise with your peers on the other side of
the world. Here in Charlotte, you have the
opportunity to share with your peers around the
corner.
A great
way to do that is getting involved with our
chapter. Joining the board or volunteering with an
upcoming event are wonderful ways to build skills
and your résumé. You're welcome to chat with me or
others on the board about the volunteer
opportunity that's right for you.
Welcome
Aboard!
We'd like to extend a warm
welcome to Thomas Hall from
Domtar who recently joined IABC/Charlotte through
his company's corporate membership.
About
Corporate Memberships It takes as few as five business
communicators to qualify for a corporate
membership. If your organization is interested in
making your dollars go further, visit the
IABC Web site for
details.
'Twas the Night Before the
Holiday Mixer... ...and all through
the town, communicators were busy jotting thoughts
down.
That's right, the Holiday
Writing Challenge returns for the second year in a
row. So, sharpen your pencils and send your
entries to mailto:programs@ciabc.comby
Dec. 1. We look forward to being delighted and
dazzled by your humor and wit.

Joint Sponsorship
of
"2010 Marketing Forecast"
January 13
It's no secret that the U.S.
economy is still in a period of resuming vigor.
Consumers are cautious with purchases, either out
of necessity or worry about the future. This
consumer mind-set dictates a change in marketing
strategy and tactics.
How will
consumers behave in 2010? Will they be
motivated to resume previous buying
patterns? How are marketers going to adapt
messages, and what media will they choose?
IABC/Charlotte is
co-sponsoring this meeting along with six other
professional organizations. The event is Jan. 13
at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Networking begins at 5
p.m. and the program at 6:30 p.m. Members are $25
and nonmembers $40. Stay tuned for registration
details.
