EVENT:
July Lunch Meeting
“Better Writing in One Hour with Tommy Tomlinson”
DETAILS:
Good writing that gets to the point and makes an impact on the reader is an essential skill of business communicators, yet one that we rarely have time to develop. Join IABC Charlotte for our July luncheon and learn from one of the best, longtime Charlotte Observer columnist Tommy Tomlinson. Even in the heat of a Carolina summer, Tommy’s Jan. 26, 2000 column about a big snowstorm cools us off with well-chosen nouns and powerful verbs coupled together in a series of two-word sentences. Come and hear Tommy talk about the process of writing, how he uses language to connect with readers and make total strangers feel like old friends, and how you can apply the same principles whether your composing an e-mail to a client, crafting Web site copy, or writing a freelance article.
Tommy has worked for The Charlotte Observer since 1989 and written a local column since 1997. He was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in commentary. In 2004, he won the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ award for profile writing. He was also named best local columnist in America by The Week magazine. Tommy claims, unless someone can prove otherwise, that he is the only journalist in history to cover the Super Bowl, the Bassmaster Classic fishing tournament, and the National Spelling Bee in the same year. He is married to Alix Felsing, a regional editor at The Observer. They will be heading to Harvard University in August for 10 months on a Nieman Fellowship in journalism, the prestigious program that recognizes mid-career journalists for their excellence.
